    • 1). Remove the old shingles with a pitch fork or shingling shovel. Slip the shovel's blade or fork's tines beneath a shingle. Slide the tool until it butts up against the shingle's nails. Pry the shingle and nails from the roof's sheathing. Remove any stubborn fasteners with a framing hammer, if necessary.

    • 2). Tear old roofing paper from the roof's surface. Remove roofing paper fasteners, such as staples, with the claw of a framing hammer if possible. If the staples cannot be removed, use a hammer to pound them flush with the sheathing's surface.

    • 3). Clean debris from the roof's surface with a push broom. Ensure that the roof's surface is free of any objects that could puncture the new layer of roofing paper.

    • 4). Unroll roofing paper along the roof's first course or eave. Cut the paper to length with a utility knife. Extend the paper ¼ to ¾ inches beyond the roof's edge. Tack the paper approximately every 12 inches with a hammer stapler. Apply a second layer of roofing paper over the first course. Overlap successive courses of paper by 2 inches. Install a final layer of paper directly over the roof's peak.

    • 5). Position a starter shingle ¼ to ¾ inch beyond the eave. While holding the shingle in place with one hand, use your other hand to fasten the shingle with a roofing nail gun. Butt the next shingle to the edge of the first, align the shingle's height and fasten the shingle with a nail gun. Continue installing starter shingles across the entire bottom course. Use a utility knife to cut shingles to size. Install a course of regular shingles atop the row of starter shingles.

    • 6). Lay the second course of shingles over the first course, overlapping them according to your shingle manufacturer's instructions. Install successive rows of shingles until you reach the peak of the roof. Install ridge shingles over the roof's peak.
