How to Finish an Attic Floor
- 1). Measure the usable attic space. Determine how many square feet of wood you will need.
- 2). Start laying the largest sections of the attic first. Plywood will come in 8-by-8 feet sheets so you may have to cut them down to get them into the attic. Start at the farthest corner. Set up and cut every portion until you have a full sub-floor down.
- 3). Screw the sub-floor into the ceiling joists. This will make the floor solid and unmovable.
- 4). Measure the width and length of the attic.
- 5). Determine where the center-point of the attic is. This can be done by finding the center-point of the length and width of the attic. Stretch a chalk line across from each center and pop the line. Where they cross is the center of the attic.
- 6). Start by laying the first four tiles in a square around this cross. This will assure you of a squared and centered room. This is important if it is going to be a spare room. Work outward from this square until you have to run out of room for full tiles.
- 7). Measure and cut the tiles to fill in the smaller areas. This will give the attic a nice finished look.
