How to Change the Brakes on a 99 Suburban
- 1). Park the Suburban on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Turn the engine off and lift the hood. Move to the front of the vehicle and lift the hood.
- 2). Remove the master cylinder cap located on the right side of the Suburban's engine. Remove two-thirds of the brake fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster or syringe. Place the master cylinder cap loosely over the container.
- 3). Loosen the lug nuts with a tire iron or 21-mm socket and breaker bar. Lift the vehicle with the jack in the lower the Suburban's frame onto jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and take the wheels off. Remove the two caliper slide pins on the back side of the caliper with a 14-mm socket and ratchet. Lift the caliper from the caliper bracket and suspend it over the brake assembly with a wire coat hanger.
- 4). Slide the two brake pads from the caliper bracket slots. Remove the caliper bracket bolts with a 17 mm socket wrench. Take the caliper bracket from the rotor and set it aside. Pull the rotor from the wheel hub with both hands. Clean the new rotor with brake parts cleaner and a cloth towel to remove the packaging oil before installing it. Slide the rotor onto the Suburban's wheel bolts and push it against the steering knuckle.
- 5). Replace the caliper bracket and screw on the brackets bolts. Apply anti-squeal brake compound to the
back side of the new brake pads. Slide the pads onto the slots of the caliper bracket. - 6). Place a C-clamp over the caliper Pistons and the back side of the Suburban's caliber. Squeeze the piston into the side of the caliper with the clamp. Remove the C-clamp once the piston is fully depressed within the side of the caliper.
- 7). Place the caliper onto the new brake pads and screw on the caliper slide pins. Replace the wheel onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand. Lift the Suburban with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle's tires to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron or 21 mm socket and breaker bar.
- 8). Start the Suburban's engine and press the brake pedal slowly to the floor. Repeat the depressions until the brake pedal response returns to normal. Return to the Suburban's engine compartment.
- 9). Remove the master cylinder cap and place the funnel into the container. Add DOT-3 brake fluid to the reservoir until the container is full. Remove the funnel and replace the master cylinder cap. Close the Suburban's hood.
