How to Change the Disc Brakes on a 2005 Dodge Caravan
- 1). Park your 2005 Dodge Caravan on a flat surface. Set the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that will be worked on by turning the lug wrench 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn. Place a jack under the vehicle's frame and raise the end of the Caravan enough so that jack stands can be placed under the axles. Finish removing the lug nuts. Remove the wheel.
- 2). Remove the two bolts holding the caliper in position with an adjustable wrench. Pull the caliper off and set it in a safe position on the axle so that it cannot fall and damage the brake line attached to it.
- 3). Push inward on the brake pads to compress the piston underneath. If the piston will not retract by hand, use a C-clamp.
- 4). Pry open the spring clips that hold the pads in place. Remove the pads. If the pads are stuck in position, pry them loose gently with a screwdriver.
- 5). Apply a small amount of silicone grease onto the back of the new pads. Place the new pads in position and seat the spring clips so the pads do not shift.
- 6). Reinstall the caliper and retighten the bolts. Put the wheel back on and tighten the lug nuts most of the way with the lug nut wrench. Remove the jack stands and lower the Caravan to the ground. Finish tightening the lug nuts with the wrench.
- 7). Open the hood and check the master cylinder's brake fluid level. The master cylinder is on the driver's side, near the rear of the engine compartment. If the fluid level is low, top it off.
