    • 1). Measure the countertop, using a tape measure. Write the measurement down. Purchase a sheet of laminate plastic that matches the texture and color of the countertop from a local hardware store. Have the hardware store cut the sheet to match the measurements you wrote down. Purchase a 2-inch by 4-inch piece of lumber that is long enough to be cut into six or seven lengths of wood that are 3 inches longer than the width of the countertop. Have the hardware store cut the wood for you, using the measurement you had written down, plus 3 inches.

    • 2). Remove any objects from the laminate countertop that is to be covered. Spray the countertop with household cleaning spray. Wipe the countertop with a paper towel.

    • 3). Sand the countertop with medium-grade sandpaper to provide a textured surface to hold the adhesive that will be used later. Sand in small, circular motions as you drag the sandpaper from one side of the countertop to the other.

    • 4). Remove the loose dirt and other contaminants from the sanding process with a water-moistened paper towel. Dry the countertop with a dry paper towel.

    • 5). Place sheets of newspaper on the floor. Place the precut sheet of laminate face down on the newspaper.

    • 6). Brush contact cement onto the surface of the countertop, starting at one end and using long strokes to apply the cement evenly. Repeat this procedure, only this time apply the contact cement to the sheet of laminate that you set on the floor.

    • 7). Let the contact cement set for about 15 minutes so it becomes tacky. Check the directions on the contact cement's can to see when the cement should get tacky. Place the cut wood strips across the width of the countertop.

    • 8). Pick up the pre-cut sheet of laminate and hold it with the glued side facing down. Place the laminate on top of the countertop so it lines up with the edges.

    • 9). Starting in one corner, remove the wood strip and roll the laminate onto the countertop, using a J-roller brush. Repeat this procedure across the length of the countertop.

Trim any excess laminate that appears distracting to your eye, using the blade of a router. Let your new laminate countertop set overnight before you place objects on it and start using your kitchen again.
