How to Attach a Countertop to a Cabinet
- 1). Ensure that you have enough people to help you lift the countertop. Granite, marble, and concrete are too heavy for one person to manage. Raise the countertop, and place it onto the cabinets. Adjust the countertop until it is centered. Measure the distance of each edge from the base to check that it is placed correctly.
- 2). Lift the front edge of the countertop as high as possible without moving the back edge. Use wooden shims placed along the edges of the base cabinets if necessary. Apply a line of silicone construction adhesive along each edge of the countertop base.
- 3). Lower the countertop into place again on top of the adhesive. Measure each edge of the countertop again to ensure that it is still centered. Remove any shims that you used. Install other pieces of the countertop using the same method that you did for the first.
- 4). Clean away superfluous adhesive from underneath the countertop using a slightly dampened cloth. Prepare epoxy filler on a white paper plate, and use it to fill any countertop seams. Let the adhesive and epoxy dry one to two days. Apply two coats of sealer to masonry countertops. Allow the sealer to dry completely before using your countertop.
