How to Harden Bolts
- 1). Inspect the propane torch to ensure it will perform correctly and that it has sufficient fuel.
- 2). Establish a stationary nonflammable work area. Prepare the No. 10 can by filling it halfway with cool or cold water and set it near the work area. Put on gloves and safety goggles prior to using the propane torch.
- 3). Heat the bolt, either holding it securely in the forceps or pliers or on a stationary non-flammable surface using the direct flame of the propane torch for 2-3 minutes. Be sure to spread the flame across the entirety of the bolt to ensure equal heating and exposure. If you are heating the bolt on a stationary non-flammable surface, use the forceps or pliers to adjust the bolt while heating.
- 4). Use the forceps or pliers to place the heated bolt into the No. 10 can for cooling in the water. Repeat the process for any further bolts to be hardened.
- 5). Remove bolt or bolts from the No. 10 can after sufficient cooling and wipe them with the cloth rag. Place the bolts in a dry area to allow for further drying. Bolts should no longer be hot when removing them from the can.
