Flour Sack Baby Projects

    • Flour sack baby projects are popular in high schools. These projects pair up two students to be parents of a sack of flour "baby." During the project, the parents are required to take care of the baby and take notes on everything. The point is for young people to see how much work it is to take care of a baby, and hopefully prevent teen pregnancy.

    Baby Activities

    • Assign the students to come up with a sensible name for the baby as well as a birth certificate. Require the students to take pictures of themselves with the baby during different "family" activities. At the end of the assignment, part of their grade should come from a family photo album, making sure they did everything requested of them by the teacher.

    Budgeting

    • Have each couple make a family budget. As all adult parents know, children are expensive. Have the students write down any thing they need to spend money on and plan a budget of how much they are able to spend on each item. It might be a good idea to give them a salary figure and some other household expenses to help them understand the concept of budgeting and how they can fit baby's expenses in with everything else.

    Journals

    • Give the student couples each a journal. Parents should take turns writing down things they did with the baby. They also need to write down how often the baby needs changing. They can also record things such as the baby's diet and how often he eats, family activities and the thoughts of the parents as they "raise" their child.

    Midnight Feedings

    • Require the students to make a middle of the night phone call to prove that they were up in the night taking care of the baby. Give them the necessary phone number and the rules to go along with the phone call, such as the hours they can make the phone call to get credit for the assignment and any follow-up calls that may be required.

    Final Paper

    • Assign the students to write a paper on their parenting experience on their own, not as a couple. Give them some suggested questions to answer and give them a required length of the paper of approximately two to three pages.
