    • 1). Choose a warm and versatile jacket. Kids should be well-insulated when playing winter outdoor sports like skiing and snowboarding. Opt for a waterproof and breathable jacket designed for kids. A hip-length jacket is necessary to prevent snow from seeping in at the waistline. Snowboarders need a roomier jacket compared to skiers to allow a full range of motion. Always choose gender-based jackets that are designed specifically for children.

    • 2). Dress kids in insulated, waterproof snow pants. Extra padding on the bottom and knees of the snow pants are ideal because plenty of time will be spent sitting in the snow while putting on bindings or falling down. Snowboard pants are typically looser than ski pants. Other key features to look for include boot gaiters, articulated knees and thick layers of insulation.

    • 3). Keep the feet warm by wearing moderately thick socks made of wool and synthetic fibers. For snowboarding, socks should extend above the calf with padding in the heel, ankles and over the toe. Wear well-fitting snowboard or skiing boots to avoid foot pain and discomfort. For regular snow boots, choose well-insulated, waterproof boots with rubber outsoles that have plenty of traction. A pair that fits well increases comfort and improves range of motion even if snow boots are typically on the heavy side.

    • 4). Select winter goggles designed for children; goggles offer comfort and protection by shielding the eyes against debris, harsh sunlight, wind and snow. Choose medium tint styles that are suitable for all conditions. Goggles are essential for snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, sledding and many other outdoor winter sports. Other essential protective items are helmets and mittens. Helmets offer protection from collision and falls. Select sports-specific helmets and mittens designed for youth for best fit and function. Choose a helmet with an adjustment system such as inner straps that can contract and expand for custom fit. Look for attachment straps in the back to hold and secure goggles. Keep kids warm with a helmet that comes with ear flaps.

    • 5). Purchase long underwear made of synthetic and wool base layers. Choose a youth size that is not too restrictive for better comfort. For insulating layers, lightweight fleece, wool top and long underwear are ideal. Layer clothing such as a lightweight fleece, wool top, inner shell jacket and pants over long underwear. Shed layers as the temperature rises and layer up if it gets cold. If weather permits, layers may also come in handy and provide more comfort than wearing a bulky jacket.
