Types of Surround Sound Speakers

    Monopole

    • Monopole speakers are placed in the same direction and are on the same plane. Since monopole speakers have drivers on one face of the enclosure, they can be used anywhere in the home theater. These types of speakers produce the best sound when they are with other direct radiating speakers and placed in the front and center.

    Bipole

    • Bipole speakers have drivers on two faces that lie opposite of each other. This means that unlike the monopole speakers, the sound emanating from bipole speakers is never aimed directly at the listener. Instead, the sound bounces off of the walls in the room, causing a "surround" sound instead of a "localized" sound.

    Dipole

    • Like bipole speakers, dipole speakers have two drivers on two faces. However, the faces are configured on the rear and front of the speakers, in opposite directions. When one side's drivers are pushing in, the others drivers are pushing out. As a result, dipole speakers are also more effective at surround sound quality rather than localized sounds.
