Martina McBride Biography:

Martina Mariea Schiff was born on July 29, 1966 in Sharon, Kansas. She's the second of four children, and has an older brother, Steve, younger sister, Gina and younger brother, Marty, who plays in her band.

Martina's family was a musical one, and they formed a group that called themselves "The Schiffters," and played at local dances in South-Central Kansas. After high school, she completed a semester of college, then left to join another band of family friends playing rock music full-time.

In 1988, Martina married John McBride, and in 1990, they moved to Nashville. Both Martina and John got jobs working for Garth Brooks.

The Purple Envelope

Still wanting to get a record deal of her own, and knowing that labels don't accept unsolicited material, Martina placed a biography, some photos, and two demo tapes in a big purple envelope and marked on the outside, "Requested Material," & sent it off at RCA, and three weeks later, she got a call, asking her to come in for an interview. This lead to the label asking her to do a showcase to demonstrate her ability to perform live, and that ead to her getting signed with RCA.

Martina's first album, The Time Has Come was released in 1992, but the three singles off it failed to gain much success for her. But, with her follow-up album, The Way That I Am in 1993, she earned her first Top 5 single, with "My Baby Loves Me," which went all the way to No. 2. The album also contained a song, while not a No. 1 for her, remains the song most people think of when they think of her, "Independence Day." The video for the song earned her the CMA Video of the Year for 1994.

Number One Success

With her third album, Wild Angels, finally had her first No. 1 with the title track.

Martina had some crossover success in 1997, with her next album, Evolution, as she collaborated with Jim Brickman on "Valentine." Plus, she added two more No. 1 songs, with "A Broken Wing," and "Wrong Again."

Emotion came out in 1999, and gained Martina another No. 1 single, with "I Love You." It was in 1999 that Martina won the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year award for the first time. She has won the award a total of four times.

Going Back To Her Roots

After much success with the country pop style music, Martina made a bold move in 2005 by recording an album of Classic country covers, called Timeless. The album debuted at No. 1, and received much critical acclaim, but the only single, "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden," received much airplay, and peaked at No. 18.
