Guide to Winter Hair Care
At this time of year our hair really suffers and we need to take special care of it.
Here are some easy steps to maintain healthy hair during the colder months.
Good diet The growth, health and even loss of your hair are all influenced by your diet.
The number one consideration when it comes to problems with hair loss is iron and vitamin C, so make sure your diet provides plenty of both.
Good sources of iron are; meat, liver, beans, nuts, whole grains, fortified breakfast cereals and dark green leafy vegetables such as curly kale.
You need vitamin C to absorb iron so make sure you include plenty of bell peppers, citrus fruits, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts and strawberries in your diet.
Other foods for healthy hair include omega-3 oils (present in fish and flaxseed), which will support scalp health, and beans and lentils, which provide protein and biotin.
Deficiencies in biotin, while rare, can result in brittle hair and protein is essential for hair growth.
Regular haircuts While regular cutting will not make the hair grow faster or stronger, it will prevent those split ends from getting out of control and will keep your hair looking much healthier.
Regular conditioning treatments During the winter it is a very good idea to invest in a good conditioner for your hair and use it every week.
If you have oily hair, use only on the ends.
If your hair is very dry, try to find a leave-in conditioner and give your hair a break from heat treatments as much as possible.
Hats It may seem obvious, but when you are outside a hat will protect your hair from the elements.
This may not always be possible but when appropriate, wear a hat.
Satin pillowcases This is a fabulous trick for keeping your locks in tip-top condition, not to mention your skin.
Cotton pillowcases are naturally absorbent and can strip your hair and skin of moisture while you sleep.
They also create friction that may lead to breakage, split ends and frizz.
If you can switch to a satin pillowcase you will notice a difference in both your skin and your hair.
