Today there are all sorts of malicious types of software that can get onto your computer and cause all sorts of problems.
You have to always be protecting yourself against threats just in case.
Traditionally we have had viruses, trojans, and worms.
Today there is a new types of malicious software that is out now called scareware that you need to be aware of.
What is scareware? Scareware are like viruses and spyware except they try to take advantage of you financially.
You will see a message about having a number of viruses on your machine and will be told to download a software.
This software will stay on your machine and tell you that if you buy this protection software you can remove the problems.
The reality is that the problems don't really exist.
It's an attempt to scare you to buy fake software that's just ripping you off.
The scareware will continuous ask you to buy it over and over until you finally agree or have it removed.
How do these types of programs get on your computer? You will get scareware on your machine by reacting to pop up and banner ads that are trying to make you think there are viruses on your machine.
You will never have your browser in an ad tell you about what's on your machine.
Don't fall for this.
At times you can get this type of malicious software on your machine from download and attachments in email.
All the normal mechanisms malware uses are used as well.
How can you avoid having these programs on your machine and not be taken advantage of? Don't pay for software unless you know it's real.
Read real reviews about software before making a purchase just to make sure.
Be skeptical about downloading and running anything on your system without knowing exactly what it is.
Do not download software from unknown or untrusted places.
Don't click on the ads saying you need to scan your system right now because of threats.
If you do need to do a scan use a legitimate virus protection software and do scans regularly with that.
Make sure you have up to date anti virus which will stop some, but not all, scareware.
Scareware is a new type of malicious software that takes advantage of people financially.
Follow the advice above to avoid being a victim, and more importantly, never let your guard down.
