How to Upgrade the Graphics on an HP Pavilion ZV5000

    • 1). Power down your laptop. Unplug the AC power adapter. Close the display panel and place the laptop face down on a flat surface. Rotate the computer so the front edge is facing you. Slide the battery release button to the left. Remove the battery pack from the battery compartment in the lower left corner of the laptop.

    • 2). Remove the 10 Phillips screws from the processor fan compartment cover in the upper left corner of the laptop. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry the cover off the laptop and set it aside.

    • 3). Remove the memory compartment cover and its two retention screws from the center of the laptop. Remove the hard drive and its two retaining Phillips-head screws from the laptop's upper right corner.

    • 4). Remove the two Phillips screws fastening the CD/DVD drive to the lower right corner of the bottom casing. Grasp the face of the drive and slide it out of its compartment. Disconnect the two ribbon cables from the back of the drive. Remove the drive from the laptop and set it aside. Remove all remaining screws from the laptop's bottom casing.

    • 5). Flip the laptop over and pull open the display panel as far as possible. Pry the keyboard cover from the laptop with a small flat-head screwdriver. The keyboard cover is the plastic piece that sits behind the top row of keyboard keys.

    • 6). Remove the Phillips screws revealed by the keyboard cover. Lift the keyboard out of the laptop and place it face down on the laptop's surface. Disconnect the keyboard's ribbon cable from the motherboard. Remove the keyboard from the laptop. Removing the keyboard will reveal the top side of the motherboard.

    • 7). Locate the graphics card in the upper left corner of the motherboard. Disconnect the LCD video cable from the graphics card. Remove the Phillips screws fastening the graphics card to the motherboard. Lift the card out of its motherboard socket and set it aside.

    • 8). Repeat this procedure in reverse to install the new graphics card and reassemble your laptop.

    • 9). Power on your laptop and insert the driver installation disc provided with your new video card. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the video card drivers. Without the appropriate drivers installed, you may experience various problems such as low screen resolution.
