Camping at Le Pavillon Royale in Biarritz
When we arrived near the coast of Biarritz, France late September we headed for the Camping le Pavilion Royale Campsite, near Bidart, just outside Biarritz.
We chose the site because of its facilities, e.
g.
heated swimming pool with sunbathing, shop, restaurant, laundry, internet access, and more importantly the sites unique access point onto the fantastic surfing beach of Il Biarritz.
We arrived from the Bordeaux region and booked in for 2 nights, then booked for another 2, then another 2 and stayed for a week - leaving only on the day they closed for the season we enjoyed its location and convenience so much.
With over 300, often spacious and fully serviced pitches, the site had beautiful sunsets each evening over the sea and the 'surf' was best early morning and late afternoon.
When we stayed late September the campsite was pretty quiet but had plenty of the 'surfer brigade', many had been there since May just for the surf and each day they would grab their boards, go through the private gate and walk down the steps to the beautiful beach.
Not keen Surfers (!) we used to enjoy sitting with our bottle of wine outside our motorhome waving to them as they came up all bedraggled and sea swept in their wetsuits.
They were certainly a friendly bunch and no real noise.
Overall the campsite facilities were clean and plentiful and we played Boule a couple of times on their little Boule pitch.
Outside the campsite about 3 minutes' walk up to the main road there was an 18 hole crazy golf with a small snack bar which was good entertainment for an afternoon.
Even better within 5 minutes' walk were bus stops - one way 15 minute trip into Biarritz itself, the other direction to St Jean de Luz - both worth at least a day out for the beaches, the boat trips or the shops, it is certainly a beautiful region of Aquitaine.
There was even a beautiful links 9 holes golf course about 5 minutes away from the campsite, at Golf d'Ilbarritz.
St with holes along the cliff tops and the beach with a free buggy thrown in to get up and down again.
It was simply the most beautiful short course I have yet played.
The challenge for us was that it was 5 minutes uphill and with golf clubs and in golf shoes, there was no way I was trying to attempt that either on foot or on my bike and the parking for a motorhome was limited! The very helpful Site office were completely nonplussed why we would want a taxi to take us to the golf club, but eventually relented and put us in a taxi with two backpackers who the taxi driver then took onwards to the train station having dropped us off for golf.
If you want a motorhome holiday in a beautiful location and an interesting area, Camping le Pavilion Royale has a lot to recommend it and we are certainly keen to return.
