With over 1,400 species in existence around the globe, it's no wonder that geckos are so loved as exotic pets. One of the favorites, the leopard gecko, actually looks like a leopard as far as its colors and stripes. Another favorite, the crested gecko, looks like it has armor protecting its eyes and its spine.

The Kawekaweau was the largest gecko ever reported. This lizard grew to be almost two feet long. Another other side of the spectrum is the dwarf gecko, which does not even reach an inch in length. It is the world's smallest reptile.

The Tokay gecko is the largest extant gecko. It gets up to 15 inches. You don't want to get bitten by one of these because it will hold on to you for a long time, and it is hard to pry it off without hurting it. Running a close second is Leach's Gant Gecko, which gets nearly as long at 14 inches. Leach's looks a little different from its counterparts because it has skin that apprears flabby.

These animals will let you know what they are feeling by making a variety of noises. They don't all make all these sounds, but in addition to the hiss that most reptiles make, they will bark and chirp. Some also make a sound that resembles a click. They use these sounds to describe a variety of emotions and desires.

One thing they can do that other reptiles can't is scale walls. They have tiny little hairs on the pads of their feet, and these grab the walls so they can climb right up. It almost seems like they have some form of suction when they do that. They only one that doesn't do this is the leopard gecko because it has claws instead of pads.

Breeders who raise leopard geckos have an opportunity to determine the sex of a hatchling. If they incubate the eggs at 90 degrees, the offspring will be a male. If they incubate in the mid 80s, it can go either way, and if they do so at 80 degrees, it will be a female.

You probably already know that lizards, which includes geckos, can break their tails off to escape a predator. They all grow them back except for the Crested Gecko. They don't look quite the same when they grow back, and they don't grow back as big. It's important for them to regenerate the tail because that is where they store fat for times when food is hard to come by.

Kuhl's Flying Gecko is one of the most unique of these reptiles. It looks as though it is flying when it lets itself fall out of a tree and glide to the ground. The flaps on its body and the webs in its feet help it do this.
