How to Upgrade Your Memory

    • 1). Shut down your unit completely, logging off and powering down. Unplug your computer from all peripheral equipment including the printer, the monitor, speakers and power supply. Pull your CPU out where you can work on it freely. Make sure you set the CPU on a clean surface.

    • 2). Remove the screws that hold your case together and remove the cover. Different units may require you to use a latch to remove the panel.

    • 3). Take a moment to clean out your unit with the can of compressed air, especially if it has collected a great deal of dust. If at all possible, do so next to a HEPA filter set on high, which will capture the freed dust.

    • 4). Slide out any components that may be between you and the old RAM. Take out the old memory by pushing the retaining clips outward and gently sliding it out. Replace it with your new RAM. If it seats properly, the retaining clips will snap into place. Be sure to pick it up where you will not come in contact with the pins or the chips -- hold it by the edges. Insert it by holding it at a 30-degree angle.

    • 5). Check your work by making sure all the small holes match on either side of the card. You will hear the retaining clips lock down on to the RAM. Once this is finished, replace all the removed components, put the case back on, screw it into place and plug the unit into all of its components.
