We live in an era of great changes.
Never before in recorded history had man ever experienced such a furious rate of development.
In just less than a century, we discarded the village for the city, the horse for the automobile and fresh clean air for factory fumes.
We are presently involved in an accelerated development trend.
Everyday, we see hills being flattened and forests being cut down to make way for highways, housing areas and other development projects.
The ways in which the land is being used leave much to be desired.
Take for instance the creation of a housing area.
Currently the developers use bulldozers to flatten out the land so as to build as many houses as possible.
In some areas we see rows upon rows of of similar houses standing like huge dominoes lined up against one another.
From afar the houses are an eye-sore.
There is no individuality and each house basically look the same.
So the residents engage in renovations to give their houses some semblance to human identity.
In order to stop these developers to indulge in continued drabness, they could build houses with some sense of beauty in mind.
They could for example, build houses in accordance with the contours of the land.
They should not just ravage the land with bulldozers to accommodate their houses instead they could accommodate their houses to the land.
Then we would have houses as well as hills.
Is it really necessary to destroy the beautiful hills to create houses? With the current technology that we have, we should be able preserve the wonderful nature rather than to scar the land isn't it? In cities the trend is of course to build huge, tall fancy skyscrapers.
The skyline of New York City is punctured by tall buildings.
Whatever blue sky that is above the city is now obscured by these buildings.
They rise as each trying to compete with the others in terms of design and prestige.
Well, they do look majestic when they are new, but after a few short years they inevitably become the victims of neglect and indifference.
The once mighty grand building becomes just another building.
Lifeless yet dull.
In my opinion, we can certainly utilize our land with loving and with care by not ravaging it.
We are of the land and when we continue to gouge out huge chunks of our mother earth, we are also gouging out our heritage.
It is fine to build houses and highways but we should not treat the land with disrespect.
Houses need not be lined up in straight lines.
Highways can curl over hills and mountains instead of going through them.
We do not need more skyscrapers to hide the sun.
It is all a matter of choice.
