Why We Need Alternate Energy

Have you ever thought about "why we need alternate energy"? With recent disasters, oil spills, and the constant assault on our atmosphere from power plant emissions, it is no wonder we need to look else where for energy sources.
The recent earthquake in Japan has made us really take a hard look at nuclear power and safety.
The radiation damage from that earthquake will have an impact on Japan for many years to come.
The BP oil rig disaster which released millions of gallons of oil into our gulf coast and had a tremendous impact on the environment.
Listed below are facts why we need alternative sources of energy.
  1. Gasoline Facts involving our cars - Car pollution causes over 50% of the carbon monoxide released into our environment.
Carbon monoxide causes smog and can be very dangerous in high concentrations.
Another by-product of combustion is carbon dioxide which has been blamed for causing global warming.
Changing from lead gasoline to unleaded has helped pollution considerably but still cars have the biggest impact on the environment.
We need to continue to concentrate on development of hybrid vehicles using electricity or hydrogen power.
This will eliminate exhaust gas emissions plus reduce noise pollution.

  2. Affect of power plants on our environment - Most power plants generate electricity from fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.
These are all non-renewable fuels which are having a tremendous impact on our environment, releasing greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.
The majority of scientists believe this release of gaseous residue is causing global warming.
Nuclear power plants, although numbers are small in comparison to fossil fuel plants, have their problems also.
As recently witness in Japan, nuclear fuel containment is a very big issue, along with storage of nuclear waste.
The other type of power plant that has been in use for decades is the hydroelectric power plants.
Using water from dams has been used worldwide, but still there are issues with these types of plants also.
Because of the demand for electrical power, river flow has been changed which in turn has an environmental effect of the river.
This issue is currently being studied by many engineers trying to come up better damn designs.
What are the solutions to these problems? You now see why we need alternate energy sources, but what are these sources? Recent developments with solar and wind can have a positive effect and help solve some of our greenhouse problems.
Giant wind farms are being constructed all around the U.
S.
to help power many homes and businesses.
Solar is becoming also a big boom nationwide.
In the near future we will see the modern home powered solely by the sun's energy.
This will make the dependency on oil less and be a clean source of pollution free energy.
We need to also concentrate on the vehicles we drive by continuing development of efficient electric cars.
Anyway we can reduce the pollution from our cars can have a tremendous impact on our planet.
