How to Gift Wrap Homemade Gifts

    • 1). Find a cardboard or shoe box that is big enough to hold your homemade gift. Add one to two layers of tissue paper in the bottom of the box to cushion the gift. Place the gift in the box and surround it with crumpled sheets of tissue paper to ensure it stays in place. Lay one to two pieces of tissue paper flat over the gift and close the lid of the box. Tape the lid of the box closed to secure it.

    • 2). Unroll the wrapping paper so it is face down on a flat surface. Place the box on the center of the unrolled wrapping paper so its shorter sides are facing to the right and left. Scoot the box close to the long edge of the paper so that when you fold the paper upward its edge reaches two-thirds of the way up the side of the box. Mirror this measurement on the other side of the box and make a pencil mark to record it. Use a pair of scissors to cut the entire length of wrapping paper at the pencil mark.

    • 3). Fold the paper up and over the box to determine the appropriate length. Make a mark 2 inches past the point that the paper meets itself. Cut the paper crosswise at this mark. Turn the box so it is face down in the center of the wrapping paper. Fold each of the crosswise edges of paper inward 1/2 inch. Bring the crosswise edge of the paper nearest you up and over the box. Smooth it flat and tape it in place to the box. Fold the second crosswise edge of paper up and over the box. It should overlap the first edge by 1 inch. Place a piece of tape in the center of the seam to secure it.

    • 4). Turn the box so one of the shorter sides is facing you. The seam should still be on top. Bend the right and left sides of the wrapping paper inward so they are laying flat against the box. Crease the four diagonal folds that this creates. Tape in place. Fold the top flap that contains the first seam downward against the box's side. Fold the edge of the bottom flap inward 1/2 inch. Fold the entire bottom flap upward over the previous flap and tape in place with one piece of tape in the flap's center. Turn the package and repeat this process on the opposite end.

    • 5). Cut a 24-to-30-inch piece of ribbon depending upon the size of your package. With the top of the wrapped gift facing upward, lay the center of the ribbon crosswise over its surface. Hold the ribbon to the sides of the gift and flip the gift over so the bottom is now facing up. Bring the ribbon ends up the side of the box and across the crosswise bottom surface, twisting them together once over its center. Wrap the ribbons lengthwise across the gift's bottom, hold them against the sides and flip the gift back over. Wrap the ribbon ends up the sides and across the front to meet in the middle. Tie the ends together in a bow.
