• Use a stringing needle or a dental-floss threader to string your beads on your yarn. Thread yarn through the large opening in the dental-floss threaders. Thread your beads onto the point of the threader and then pull the yarn through the beads. String 4 or 5 inches of beads at a time. When you run out of beads, cut your yarn and thread on more beads. This avoids excessive rubbing on your yarn and excessive weight which can stretch the yarn.
  
  

Knitting with Pre-Strung Beads

• Knit to the stitch where you plan to place a bead. Bring your yarn to the front. Slip the next stitch purl-wise. Slide a bead up the yarn in front of the slipped stitch or between two stitches. Pull it into place as closely as possible. Then move your yarn to the back, which wraps it around the slipped stitch, holding the bead in place. Knit the next stitch. If you are purling, bring your yarn to the back, slip the next stitch purl-wise. Pull a bead up the yarn into place and bring your yarn to the front again. Purl the next stitch.
  
  

Adding Beads As You Knit

• Knit to the place where you want to add a bead. Insert a small crochet hook through the hole in the bead. Insert the crochet hook, holding the bead, through the next stitch on the left-hand needle and remove the stitch from the knitting needle. Pull the stitch through the bead and then replace the stitch on the left-hand needle. Knit or purl the stitch as your pattern requires.
  
  

Considerations

• Use very small crochet hooks, size #13 for size 8/0 beads. Use a #11 hook for size 6/0 beads and for size 5/0 beads. Beads are sized by the number of them it takes to fit into specific measurement, so the smaller the number the larger the bead. Crochet hooks are sized differently -- the larger the number, the smaller the hook. When you are designing your scarf or stole, remember that beads can weigh down the fabric of your stole, stretching it out of shape. The more beads you add, the heavier the stole or scarf will be.
