How to Design a Virtual Store
- 1). Register a domain name. This doesn't have to be with an expensive outfit; however, it is necessary. The identifiable Web address is still a key way to attract business. Create the domain name as close to your store entity as possible. For example if you are creating custom made cupcakes, your website can be "yourcupcakes.com." Use your business name in the domain address if possible, but remember short and to the point is key.
- 2). Set up the mechanics of the store. An email address is the first step, Web hosting is second. Web hosting is the entity that will host your website for you. You can attach your store to an affiliate such as Amazon.com or CafePress, but your Web store will have its own home. An account that is designed to accept Internet financial transactions, or a shopping cart is next. Many reliable programs are out there that can roll several of these services into one. Often companies that register domain names offer packages for bundles of services.
- 3). Research the competition. Find out what other virtual stores in your same category or product range are doing. Don't copycat, but do pay attention to the ones that appeal to you and list the reasons why. Use the positives and also learn from the negatives; make sure you don't repeat the mistakes of other virtual stores you visit that you do not like.
- 4). Deliver clear and concise information on your products. Artful and professional photos, clear descriptions and straightforward navigation are very important. With a large number of choices available, if a customer finds your store lacking in ease to find what they want, they will click elsewhere.
- 5). Link to other advertising sites or sellers when possible. Some major Internet retailers will sell your products on their website for a fee. This type of transaction can generate traffic for your business. Affiliate with large websites such as eBay, Cafe Press or even Amazon if you can get your products showcased. You can garner sales from these sites as well as gain possible traffic through the connection. Contact products sellers at their websites and look for information on affiliate programs.
- 6). Network socially and through advertising. Put your name out there and your products to direct people to your store.
- 7). Hire assistance if you are not familiar with designing or maintaining a website. You will want to have a hands-on approach; however, having someone with expertise set things up for you can make the difference between a very savvy virtual store and one that is overlooked.
- 8). Continually upgrade and listen to feedback. Pay attention to what customers tell you and implement changes when necessary.
