We are living in the age of super size food servings. Competition amongst food outlets has led to more food being offered for out money - more "bang for our buck". It has become so commonplace we now expect to get bigger servings and/or more food for our money, such as a large soda or large French fries being added as part of a package. We want value for money, so we look for the best deal we can get. What this means is we are eating more food and, if it is take-away, we re consuming more fat, particularly trans fat, which is the bad fat. We all know, if we can eat less we will lose weight, but how to we put this into practice?

How To Downsize Your Portions

You can start by not looking for the super sized burger or chicken combo. Go for the smaller servings. It may not seem such good value for money, but in the long run, it is an investment in your health. When you eat at home, cut down on the portions. Using a smaller plate is a strategy that has been used successfully by many people. If you are having your favourite meal, do not back up for more just because you like it. You do not have to leave the table completely stuffed - start leaving some behind or take smaller servings. Drink a glass or two of water before a meal, this will make you feel full.

Lose A Pound A Day?

The fewer calories you take in, the more weight you will lose. Did you know, if you drop you calorie intake by 20 per cent, which is one fifth, you could lose about 1 pound a week or 2.2 kilos? This is based on the calorie intake of the average male, who takes in about 2600 calories a day. A woman is slightly lower at 1900 calories. You need to lose 3500 calories to lose a pound of weight - 500 a day for 7 days is 3500 calories. That means you only have to drop you food portion by one fifth everyday to start losing stomach fat. In other words, eat less and you will lose weight.

Achievable Weight Loss Target

This seems an achievable weight loss target. If it is not, work out what you think is achievable for you. Maybe you can start by reducing you food portions by 10 per cent. You can do this until you hit your ideal weight. Many of us can cut back on the amount of food we eat without suffering any ill effects. In fact, most of us would be better off. The problem is, this strategy might be too simple and yet, it is often the simple things that work best. Many of us are carrying too much weight because we have become used to eating large meals. This is a habit we can change so that we eat less and lose weight
