Disco fashion in the 1970s ranged widely. From loose fitting to skin tight, anything went. Fashion in the disco era was all about excess: sequins, bright colors and whatever else looked good on the dance floor. This marked one of the first times in American culture when mainstream women were allowed to dress sexily without much backlash. - Platform shoes were all the rage in the disco era, and the higher the better. People wore platforms with all types of outfits---shorts, dresses and pants. Many types of shoes came with platform soles, from sandals to tennis shoes. Platform soles could range from only an inch or so high to three to four inches.
- A popular choice for women was hot pants. Hot pants are extremely short shorts, often exposing the lower portion of a woman's behind. They could be denim or polyester and were often brightly colored. Hot pants might have been worn with platform shoes, high boots or flat sandals.
- Caftans were another extreme in the disco era. Caftans are long, flowing dresses with long sleeves and not much shape. Their popularity began with hippies in the 1960s and extended to the disco era, when people wore brightly colored or sequined caftans. Some people wore belts with their caftans for a more shapely look.
- The most popular pants style for disco dancers was bell bottoms. These pants were usually extremely tight to the knee and then ballooned out, forming a bell-like look. The larger the bell, the better. Bell bottoms were popular for both men and women and would often be paired with tight-fitting shirts.
- Women often wore maxi dresses during the evening for a more formal look. The dresses were long and usually sleeveless or strapless. They could be beaded or sequined for extra flair. Maxi dresses were likely made of satin or other shiny fabrics.
