The Most Important Feature of a Neck Pillow: Comfort!

101 6
All to often we purchase a pillow that's not comfortable. Maybe your doctor or chiropractor recommended you a pillow or a neighbor swears by a particular one, etc. So you get it, bring it home, and it's just not comfortable at all.

A neck pillow specifically should have a built in neck support. This gently cradles your head while improving the cervical curvature. Studies have shown that the cervical curve (neck curve) should be between 40-60 degrees. This plays a huge part in neck function and your health. After all the brain is your main control center and sends messages down the spinal cord (an extension of the brain), out the nerves, and out to smaller and smaller nerves. That is how our body can function. If you touch something that nerve signal goes in the opposite direction up to the brain, and this happens all in a millisecond.

Keeping that neck curve intact is our bodies optimal position; and this alignment is not random. When we have that curve in place, the spinal cord is relaxed and messages are relayed all over the body with no interference. Think of a rubber band. When it's just sitting there, it's relaxed, but if you pull it straight it becomes rigid and tight.

Back to the pillow. So, we want that neck roll to help maintain or improve our neck curve. But, guess what, if it's so uncomfortable you can't lay on it for more than 10 minutes, it won't do its job.

This is the problem i find with a lot of neck pillows out there, they're just too hard! I also find many foam pillows to be on the harder side. Memory foam has become quite popular over the years, but if you're not used to it then it can feel very firm. The memory foam usually conforms to you but there will be a built in neck roll to hold the curve too. Also, sometimes foam pillows seem to hold more heat. So, especially during the summer or warmer days the foam can be uncomfortable for this reason too.

The Cervical Linear Traction Neck Pillow is a fiber pillow. It's not too hard, not too soft, it's just right. There is a built in neck roll in the bottom of the "V" and there is a neck roll on the gravity side as well. The neck roll has some give to it but it doesn't completely flatten. This is extremely important because you hardly feel the neck roll. This way you can correct your posture while sleeping soundly.

You see, if you have lost that neck curve it may show up in your posture. Have you ever seen that person with their head jutting way out forward (technical term: forward head carriage)? Well, if you lose that curvature in the neck you may see this. Therefore, posture will tip us off to what the spine looks like inside of us. Otherwise, you need an x-ray to view spinal alignment.

We now know the importance of using that neck pillow; or maybe you already knew. If the pillow is not comfortable, then someone who desperately needs to use it, won't. Comfort is #1. If it is comfortable to sleep on then that individual will use it,and then we can get some correction in spinal alignment.

Keep in mind, that getting a good night's sleep is most important, this is why comfort is number one.Your body does a lot of its repair and healing when you sleep. Who wants to be cranky and moody that next day at work, all because your hard pillow didn't allow you to sleep good. At least your co-workers wouldn't want that anyway. So when choosing a neck pillow, get one that's comfy first!
