Sleep deprivation is defined as a condition where the body does not receive enough or adequate rest.
The immediate effects can include one or more of the following: 1) Danger driving on the roads - A person's alertness and ability to react in a timely manner can be seriously affected by sleep deprivation.
On the road this can prove harmful and certainly fatal.
Road conditions constantly change and one has to be consistently alert and aware of all that is happening around them.
2) Reduced awareness at work - Sleep deprivation can affect an individual at work whether they are office staff or use machinery on a shop-floor.
In all instances a lack of sleep can be a serious concern.
In the office there may be moving equipment such as a heavy-duty printer, electrical or objects that can result in serious trips and falls.
On the shop floor if there is heavy machinery such as forklifts, machines with blades or heavy-duty rollers and so on, there is ample opportunity for an incident or accident to occur.
3) Irritability and a short temper - This can result in tension between workers or more often rifts in personal or martial relationships.
Individuals may find that with a lack of sleep they are on a "short fuse" and lash out at anything that they consider as adding stress to their already tired minds.
This irritability can result in a lower than desired quality of life as the person will not appreciate simple things such as playing with their children after work, going on nice walks with their family or going to a movie with a partner.
Everything becomes a chore and hindrance.
4) Feeling sleepy during or throughout the day - This feeling of constant fatigue causes misery all day long.
Individuals suffering from sleep deprivation often wake up tired and find it hard to start their day in any proper way.
They simply go through the motions looking at the clock constantly and lack responsiveness or coherence.
5) Memory lapses - Sleep deprivation can cause an individual to forget things constantly.
The mind and one's cognitive abilities are never at full strength when the body cannot recharge itself through rest.
Many people incorrectly make self-diagnosis concluding that they are "stressed out" or have "too much on their mind".
While that may be true as a result of lacking sleep, it may not be the cause.
Sleep deprivation is a serious condition and the first step an individual can take to solving or reversing its effects are realizing and admitting that there is a problem.
From there they can seek medical advice or if still in the early stages attempt to diagnose the problem.
Sleep deprivation can range from a variety of causes such as: 1) Sleep apnea, (which in itself has several different stages) 2) Snoring 3) The individual's sleep routine 4) Sleep position 5) The sleep environment It is important to pinpoint which one or more of these causes result in the sleep disorder and from there the person can move in the right direction to curb the immediate effects of sleep deprivation.
