- 1). Wash your hands with antibacterial soap. This prevents infection.
- 2). Soak the piercing in saline solution. You can make your own saline solution by combining sea salt with warm water or you can use the same kind that you'd use for contact lenses. Pour the solution into a small cup and place the piercing in the cup. Yes, this puts you in an awkward position, but it helps to clean the area.
- 3). Open the lip ring with the needle-nose pliers. Lip rings are very difficult to get apart. Insert the closed pliers into the center of the ring and open them up. This will stretch the ring so that the ball comes out and you will be able to slip it off. Create an opening that is wide enough for your lip to go through.
- 4). Remove the lip ring.
- 5). Soak the area in saline solution again. This cleans the open wound.
