- Polar fleece is a type of synthetic fleece that was created in the 1990's as a response to some people's concerns that shearing sheep for natural fleece products might be harmful to the sheep. Polar fleece is made from plastic, and plastic is made from petroleum-- and can be made of recycled plastic bottles. This makes it a "green" material, and many who are advocates for recycling consider it to be a good product.
The reason polar fleece is so soft is because it is made of synthetic fibers that are napped and insulated, something which natural fleece may not be able to do as well. - One of the biggest differences between natural fleece and polar fleece, aside from the fact that polar fleece is softer, is that polar fleece does not absorb moisture as well as natural fleece. Because of this, some people may feel as though they are really sweating when wearing polar fleece.
- Polar fleece is very soft, comfortable and of course warm. In addition, it is hydrophobic, meaning that it won't even hold 1% of its weight in water even when soaking wet. This may make it a good alternative for wearing when skiing or doing other winter activities. Another advantage is that it can be a good substitute for those who are allergic or are sensitive to wool. However, even with these advantages, there are some definite disadvantages which may make some choose not to use polar wool products.
One disadvantage is that polar fleece is flammable, even when it is treated with a fire retardent, possibly making it an unsafe option, especially for children. Also, it is not heat resistant and it can be damaged if you wash it in a high temperature water. Finally, polar fleece is not windproof.
