When you ask bassists what is the most difficult aspect when it comes to the double bass, they will often mention the size. Given the height of a double bass, transporting it can be difficult. When buying a double bass here are some factors to consider:

Budget

Always start with a budget. Your budget will also determine if you can afford to buy a new instrument or a second hand one. Just be very careful when buying second hand instruments, check to see if you're really getting a good deal.

Renting is also a good option as it gives you time to get acquainted with the instrument before you decide to buy it.

Manufacturer/Maker

There are several good double bass manufacturers such as Maggini, Guadaninni, Hawkes and Fendt. Quality double basses, as well as all instruments, cost more because of the craftsmanship and science behind it. But there are also less expensive counterparts. Your best bet is to browse music shops, online shops and your local paper to see what brands will suit your budget and playing needs. You can also ask a music teacher for recommendations.

Playability/Tone

First of all you must determine which size of double bass is right for you. When shopping for a double bass, try playing the instrument yourself to assess whether you'll be able to handle it comfortably. Also, make note of how the double bass sounds, it should sound powerful.

Bring along a music teacher or a bassist to help you especially when checking for tone. String instruments tend to sound different depending on where you play it and how far the listener is.

Aesthetic Appeal and Inner Condition

Check whether the double bass has scratches or dents. Make sure all parts are properly fitted and functioing well. You must also inspect the inside of the double bass, meaning you should play it and listen to how it sounds. If your'e a beginner, ask an experienced double bass teacher or player to check it out for you.

Store Policy/Repair

When buying a musical instrument, always make sure to check store policies when it comes to renting, repair, maintenance or even resale and exchange. This is important so that when the need arises you'll know exactly where to go and how to go about it.
