    • 1). Set aside some time each day to work on the Bob Books. Sit in a comfortable chair and set aside all other tasks, so you can devote the time to the child and the reading project.

    • 2). Look at each letter of the word on the first page of the first book and teach the letter through its sound. Point to the "M" and teach the letter as "m-m-m-m." Point to the second letter and teach the letter as "a-a-a-a." Point to the third letter and teach the letter as "t-t-t-t-t". When the child puts the three letters together, he'll put them together as "m-m-m....a-a-a....t-t-t" or "mat."

    • 3). If the child is having trouble concentrating on the individual letter that you want to work on, cover up other letters and have him only read the m-m-m. Then, cover the "M" and uncover the "A" and read that together. Continue with the "T". You can use this technique to teach that reading progresses from left to right.

    • 4). Use the book's pictures as reading clues to assist the child in remembering each letter's sound and helping her to use context as a guide in reading.

    • 5). Move on to the next book in the set after the child has mastered the letters and sounds in the first book.

    • 6). Continue the process of teaching the child to master the letters and sounds in each book and then slowly combine the letters into words and then words into sentences.

    • 7). Move on to each new book when the child has mastered the material in the previous book.

    • 8). Celebrate after completing each book or each of the five boxed sets to build on the child's sense of accomplishment.
