- 1). Measure the length of the dress you're considering purchasing. Most special occasion dresses start at the knee. A shorter dress is often worn for a less formal occasion with fewer people or party that takes place during the day.
- 2). Research fabric choices. A thicker fabric works better if your intent is to wear the dress for parties during the colder months. Fabrics with a lighter feel are useful for special occasions during the spring and summer.
- 3). Take sleeve length and necklines of any dress into close consideration. If you have well toned arms, search for a dress that has cap sleeves and a sweetheart neckline to help you look your best. If your arms are not quite in tip-top shape, choose a longer sleeve or a dress that has illusion or netting fabric. Bring attention to your face with a portrait neckline.
- 4). Evaluate available color choices. Neutral colors such as cream and tan will help you fit in easily at any special occasion. Pastels such as lilac, sky blue and pale lime are appropriate for spring and summer. Darker colors and jewel tones including sapphire and crimson are ideal for parties during the fall and winter.
- 5). Take pictures and visit several stores. Pictures will help you keep track of what you like and what you did not. If you have spent time trying on multiple dresses, you may find it difficult to remember all the details of each. Bring a digital camera with you.
