How to Care for Your Burned-Out Lawn in Philadelphia

    • 1). Drive an edging shovel into the ground around the perimeter of the burned-out area.

    • 2). Dig up the burned-out grass and the top inch of soil.

    • 3). Add a layer of topsoil, 1/2-inch deep, to the excavated area.

    • 4). Add a starter fertilizer to the new soil. This type of fertilizer contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, mixed in a ratio of 1:1:1 or 1:2:1. Do not apply the fertilizer on the healthy grass surrounding the damaged area, or you could burn that out as well.

    • 5). Spread a generous layer of grass seed onto the soil. Use your hands for a small area, and a seed spreader for a larger area.

    • 6). Apply topsoil, 1/2-inch deep, over the seeds with your hands.

    • 7). Water the seeded area with a fine misting spray. Don't apply water under high pressure; doing so can wash away the seeds and soil. Water the soil every other day until the seeds begin to germinate, then keep watering every other day for two weeks after that. Stay off the grass until it's long enough to cut.

    • 8). Begin mowing the new grass when it's 4 inches high.
