    • 1). Determine the overall length and trajectory of your planting fence. Mark a guide line with chalk or landscape-safe spray paint.

    • 2). Determine the number of plants you want, or can afford to plant; this will determine how closely you plant the trees, and how dense the barrier will be. The closer you plant the arborvitae, the more quickly you will achieve a knitted-in fence look and function.

    • 3). Dig holes along the fence line to accommodate the diameter of each rootball, plus an extra foot in width, at your pre-determined intervals. Keep the depth the same as the root ball, but churn up and loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole (do not remove it) to encourage root penetration.

    • 4). Place the arborvite in the holes, being careful to maintain a consistent soil level on the main root stem. Backfill the soil and compact lightly with your foot around the perimeter. Water the trees well to collapse any air holes. Add more soil, as needed, to create a level surface.
