How to Change the Strings on a Breedlove Guitar
- 1). Place the guitar on a flat, padded surface, with the string side facing up, and place a polish cloth underneath the strings over the sound hole to protect the finish.
- 2). Place a business card or similar size piece of cardboard on the guitar body, directly behind the bridge, underneath the string holes. Secure the card with a strip of tape. The card will protect the guitar finish when removing strings. If your Breedlove guitar bridge uses string pins, you may skip this step.
- 3). Loosen the lowest (6th or "E") string by turning the string's tuning key with a peg winder in a clockwise direction. When the string is sufficiently loosened, remove the string from the tuning post by unwrapping the windings, and pulling through the tuning post string hole.
- 4). Holding the loose string in one hand so the string will not contact the guitar, and push the string through the back of the bridge. Continue threading the string through the bridge to remove it fully. The string may be trimmed with wire cutters to make the curled, winding end easier to thread through the hole.
If your guitar bridge uses string pins, pry the pins out using the notch at the bottom of the peg winder. The strings will pull easily out of the recessed holes. - 5). Remove the new string from the package and unwind it. You will notice a metal ball on one end, which is used to anchor the string to the bridge, and a plain wire end, which will connect to the tuning post.
- 6). Insert the plain end of the string through the hole in the string-through bridge, and pull it through until the ball end is seated in the recessed bridge hole.
If your bridge uses string pins (also called "bridge pins"), insert the ball-end of the string into the hole about one inch, insert the pin fully into the hole, and tug slightly on the string to seat it in place. - 7). Wrap the plain end of the string around the tuning post about three to four times, starting from the bottom of the post, winding toward the post hole in a spiral.
- 8). Insert the plain end of the string into the post hole, directly above the top winding, pull it through, and bend up at a 90 degree angle from the post.
- 9). Tune the string to pitch, trim the excess string close to the tuning post with wire cutters, and repeat steps 3 through 9 for the remaining strings. Remove the cloth and business card after all strings are replaced.
