    • 1). Acquire at least 10 months of teaching experience in a Connecticut public school district under your Initial Educator Certificate, which is the first level in Connecticut's three-tier continuum for educators. The Initial Educator Certificate is valid for three years, providing the option to gain more experience before training to become a cooperating teacher.

    • 2). Apply for your Provisional Educator Certificate from the Connecticut State Department of Education after you have met your testing and teaching duration requirements under your Initial Educator Certificate.

    • 3). Complete the Beginning Educator Support and Training program through your local district directly from the Connecticut State Board of Education or through a Connecticut college that offers a support teacher training program approved by the board. You earn continuing education units from the Connecticut State Board of Education as you train, which count toward your Professional Educator Certificate, the highest level in Connecticut's three-tier continuum.

    • 4). Welcome student teachers to be mentored in your classroom as the Connecticut State Board of Education refers them to you. You need to work in conjunction with your school district and principal before accepting student teacher assignments. According to "Title II Teacher Quality Enhancement" of the Connecticut State Board of Education, cooperating teachers earn 1.5 continuing education units for each student teacher placement, and those units count toward earning your Professional Educator Certificate.
