How to Remove Old 4-x-4 Wood Fence Posts
- 1). Put on work gloves. Grab the fence post with both hands and rock it back and forth vigorously. Loosen the post as much as possible. If the post doesn't budge at all, the concrete is holding it firmly in the ground.
- 2). Dig around the base of the fence post with a shovel and expose as much of the concrete base as possible.
- 3). Grab both sides of the post and rock it back and forth, this time rocking the concrete slab as well. Loosen the post as much as possible with this motion.
- 4). Plant your feet and begin pulling the post and the concrete out of the ground. For really tough jobs or a large quantity of fence posts, use a skid steer to do the heavy pulling. Repeat for each fence post.
- 5). Shovel soil into the holes left by the fence posts until they are slightly over-full.
