    • 1). Add an audio file to the current composition by dragging the file from the After Effects library window into the composition time line. Waveforms can only be created in compositions that contain some type of audio data.

    • 2). Right-click on the audio file in the composition time line and select "Effect."

    • 3). Highlight "Generate" within the Effects sub-menu and select "Audio Waveform." The Audio Waveform Generator is applied to the audio file.

    • 4). Access the settings of the Audio Waveform Generator by clicking within the Effect Controls menu to the left of the composition preview window.

    • 5). Change the value of "Displayed Samples" to increase or decrease the density of the waveform. Change the "Maximum Height" value to determine the height of the waveform when the audio volume reaches its peak. Increase or decrease the "Thickness" value to change the physical appearance of the line that makes up the waveform.

    • 6). Click on "Composition" in the main After Effects toolbar. Highlight "Preview" and select "RAM Preview" to view the waveform and listen to the accompanying audio.
