How to Measure Clothing Laid Out Flat

    • 1). Lay your clothes on a flat surface. Pull the edges tightly from hem to hem and side seam to side seam.

    • 2). Put the tape measurer on point A and extend it to point B. Measure the waist at the top of your pants from left to right. Measure the crotch from the middle top of the pants to where the legs split -- for both front and back. Measure the thighs by aligning the measurer at the crotch, where the pants split, and outward to the side seam of the leg -- for both front and back. For a skirt, at the hip level, measure from the far left of the hip to the far right of the hip. Measure the length of your pant leg from the crotch to the bottom of the pant leg. Measure shoulder width from the outside of one shoulder seam to the outside of the other shoulder seam. Measure the chest from armpit to armpit. Measure the back from armpit to armpit. Last, measure the shirt length from the neckline to the bottom of the shirt. When you measure for length, start at the top of the shoulder, close to the neckline.
