103 10
Deciding you want to quit smoking and then following through and really doing it takes some planning.
It may sound silly but if you prepare yourself for the day you kick the habit, doing things leading up to your quitting day, you will be more successful.
Here is a list of things you can do to prepare yourself to quit smoking.
1.
Make a decision to quit and keep positive about your decision.
Don't think about how difficult it will be, don't dwell on the negative.
2.
List all the reasons you want to stop smoking.
Keep this list handy to review especially before you go to bed at night.
3.
Think about all the time you waste smoking, looking for matches, standing outside buildings to smoke and decide your time is more valuable than smoking is.
4.
Wash your clothes.
Yes, the smell of smoke lingers on clothes a long time so cleaning them will be very helpful to you.
You don't want to smell like a smoker.
5.
Set a date to quit.
If you smoke a lot at work then set your quitting date when you are off.
You want to have a few days of not smoking under your belt if you have to go into a smoking environment.
Ideally it is best to stay away from places that you tend to light up in for awhile until you feel confident enough to be able to overcome the urge to smoke because you usually do it while you are there.
Mark your quitting day on your calendar and keep it.
Looking at how many days you go without smoking helps reinforce the fact that you can do it! That you are doing it! Be proud of yourself! Remember you don't have to think you will never smoke again; you are taking one day at a time.
Tell yourself you won't have a cigarette today and then don't.
