    • 1). Disconnect the sparkplug wire. While holding the string head, unscrew the spool retainer by turning it either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on your model.

    • 2). Remove the spool from the string head.

    • 3). Measure two 9-foot-long pieces of string and cut them with scissors.

    • 4). Place the first string into the anchor hole in the upper part of the spool. Wind it around the upper part of the spool counterclockwise. Place the string in the slot on the upper spool flange, leaving 6 inches extended. After winding the line, there should be a 1/4-inch gap between the wound string and the outside edge of the spool.

    • 5). Repeat with the second string on the bottom half of the spool.

    • 6). Replace the spool and the spool retainer.
