When Are Large Tarps Needed?

Did you know that tarps come in many sizes? For the average person ordering the material, a tarp usually covers an area no larger than a vehicle or portion of a roof.
Nevertheless, tarps are needed in various industrial applications on a large scale.
The use is practically the same - the material protects an area or investment from water or UV exposure - but the size of coverage needed is much larger.
Most tarps in these instances are made from heavy-duty polyethylene and treated to be UV resistant, waterproof, rot proof, and mildew resistant.
Covering the load on a truck is one of the more common uses for large tarps.
Polyethylene, in this case, is ideal for protecting a load of material that shouldn't be exposed to water, such as lumber or asphalt.
In these cases, a polyethylene tarp would be wrapped around the load of wood or cover the top of a dump truck.
Not all materials need protection from water, however, and other types of tarps may be used in transit.
Polypropylene mesh, for example, is another tarp used to cover a dump truck when rocks and gravel are being transported.
The next time you find yourself at or near a construction site, observe the area around.
How many tarps do you see? In this instance, you may actually see several, with two to three materials being used.
When a construction site is bordering a street, for example, a large polyethylene or mesh tarp lines the fence separating the sidewalk from the site.
In this case, the tarp acts as a barrier against dirt and debris and keeps these inside the site.
Additionally, polyethylene or vinyl tarps may be used around buildings.
These, too, keep in debris, but they also keep heat inside when work is going on.
Aside from industrial uses, tarps are also found on athletic fields.
Although you may seldom see the material there, the polyethylene is rolled out if rain hits.
In these cases, rain will turn the field to mud and cancel later games.
Although the immediate game will be canceled, the large tarp, often in the shape of a baseball field diamond, will cover the ground and keep it dry.
