How to Speak English With a Friend
- 1). Make an agreement with your friend that you will speak more English together. When both of you have agreed to this idea, you are more likely to be accountable to each other and stick with the agreement.
- 2). Talk together in English at least once a day. Do so for two or three minutes for the first few times you speak in English to each other. Then increase the amount of time each day. Eventually, you will be able to have conversations in English that last several minutes at a time. You will notice your ability to form sentences and to find the right words will increase. You will speak more confidently and quickly each day.
- 3). Write down new words you learned during your conversation with your friend. Practice them until you see your friend again by thinking in English and using those words in the sentences you form in your head. Also practice writing sentences with the words to help you remember them.
- 4). Talk about topics that have simple, everyday vocabulary at first, such as what you did that day, what you want to eat for dinner or the subject of a book. Then move to more difficult topics, such as giving your opinions about something in the news or something controversial.
- 5). Correct your friend when you notice he makes a mistake in speaking English. Do so nicely and only after he has completed his statement. It is most important that your friend speaks an entire thought aloud in English, not that each word he speaks perfect English.
- 6). Thank your friend when he corrects something you have said incorrectly in English and make a mental note to incorporate what he said into your English in the future. Write down the correction with your list of new words to help you remember the pronunciation of difficult words or grammar points.
- 7). Watch news stories or movies in English together to learn new words. When you are finished watching the story or movie, discuss what you saw and what you think about it. During the video, use subtitles the first time you watch it and then turn them off the second time you watch it. If you are watching a news video online, read the transcript of the story if it is available, and then watch the video again without help of the transcript.
