    Function

    • Instruments and microphones connect to the mixer's inputs. A sound engineer works the controls, blending vocals and instruments together. The result is the music you hear.

    Features

    • There are many parts to a sound mixer that control its various functions. The inputs are connections for microphone and line level signals. A fader is a slide control to set a sound's loudness in the mix. The equalization controls let you adjust bass and treble for each input. The pan pots position each sound between stereo left and right. The effects send/return connects to external effects units, like reverb. Master level controls set the mixer's overall loudness. Loudness level meters monitor sound levels. The mixer has two or more outputs, for stereo.

    Types

    • A console mixer is a large mixer used in music studios. D.J. mixers have features like turntable input for D.J. & club use. Small convenience mixers let you use several instruments at the same time.

    Prices

    • As of 2009, some small home-use mixers run as low as $50. A typical home studio mixer will be between $200 and $299. Many professional-grade mixers cost $1,000 to $2,999.

    History

    • The first sound mixers were developed in the 1930s for radio and movie production. Mixers for home studios became popular in the 1980s.
