Starting Problems

• 1). Check to see if the fuel tank is empty.
  
  
• 2). If the weed eater has fuel, completely depress the primer bulb three more times and attempt to start the unit again.
  
  
• 3). Replace the fuel if it is old or improperly mixed. The fuel should be mixed using a 40-to-1 ratio, or 1 gal. of gasoline to 3.2 fluid ozs. of two-cycle engine oil (1 liter of gasoline to 25 ml of two-cycle engine oil). Never add unmixed fuel to the tank.
  
  
• 4). Disconnect the wire from the spark plug and remove it with a spark plug socket and a ratcheting wrench. Clean the spark plug and check the gap. The correct gap size is 0.02 inches. Reinstall the spark plug and reconnect the spark plug wire. If the spark plug shows signs of excessive wear, replace it with a new one.
  
  
• 5). If the engine does not start correctly after completing this section, take the weed eater to an authorized Troy-Bilt dealer.
  
  

Idling Problems

• 1). Remove the air filter cover and clean the air filter. A clean air filter allows the correct air/fuel mixture to enter the engine. Replace the air filter if needed.
  
  
• 2). Drain the fuel and add fresh fuel that has been mixed with the correct amount of two-cycle engine oil.
  
  
• 3). Adjust the idle speed of the carburetor. Allow the engine to warm up at high speed for one minute. Place the weed eater on the ground. Release the throttle to let the engine idle. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the hole in the air filter cover. Turn the screwdriver clockwise 1/8 of a turn at a time until the engine idles evenly.
  
  
• 4). If the engine does not idle correctly after completing this section, take the weed eater to an authorized Troy-Bilt dealer.
  
  

Acceleration Problems

• 1). Replace the fuel if it is old or improperly mixed. The fuel should be mixed using a 40-to-1 ratio, or 1 gal. of gasoline to 3.2 fluid ozs. of two-cycle engine oil (1 liter of gasoline to 25 ml of two-cycle engine oil). Never add unmixed fuel to the tank.

• 4). If the engine does not accelerate correctly after completing this section, take the weed eater to an authorized Troy-Bilt dealer.
  
  

Cutting Problems

• 1). Turn off the weed eater. Remove any grass, weeds or other debris from the cutting attachment.
  
  
• 2). With the weed eater off, remove the cutting-line reel and make sure it is filled with line. Replace the reel and start the engine again.
  
  
• 3). Remove the cutting-line reel and rewind the line if it is bound up. Replace the reel and start the engine again.
  
  
• 4). If the cutting head will not operate properly after completing this section, replace the cutting head with a new one.
