How to Replace the eMachines M6811's Motherboard

    • 1). Remove the M6811's power cable and unplug any USB devices connected to the notebook. Shut down the operating system and close the black lid. Turn over the notebook so the bottom is accessible.

    • 2). Locate the rectangular battery pack at the lower-left corner of the notebook. Slide the two battery locking bars toward each other and pull out the battery pack. Remove the memory cover screw, which is positioned near the left edge of the notebook.

    • 3). Pull off the plastic memory cover to access the internal memory module. Slowly push apart the two tabs on the top and bottom of the notebook's green memory module until the module pops up. Slide the module away from the notebook at a 45-degree angle

    • 4). Use needle-nose pliers to pull off the two black cables attached to the bottom of the wireless card, which is positioned to the left of the memory module. Repeat the process of pushing apart the tabs on the wireless card and pull the card out of the eMachines notebook.

    • 5). Remove the hard drive screw, which is positioned to the right of the empty battery bay. Grip the edge of the plastic hard drive bay and pull the bay toward you to remove it from the notebook. Remove the DVD drive screw above the empty battery bay and slide the DVD drive out of the notebook.

    • 6). Flip the M6811 over and open the black lid so the notebook is spread out flat. Push the end of a flathead screwdriver under the plastic tab above the "F7" key and pull the plastic cover above the keyboard off the notebook.

    • 7). Remove the three screws positioned at the top of the keyboard. Pull the keyboard toward you until it is standing vertical. Unplug the cable from the back of the keyboard and pull the keyboard off the notebook's case. Disconnect the black cable running from the display screen to the port at the top of the motherboard.

    • 8). Locate the four screws along the edges of the palm rest. Remove the screws and take the palm rest off the notebook computer. Find the silver and copper colored heat sink and fan assembly at the left side of the motherboard.

    • 9). Remove all four screws holding the assembly in place and pull the assembly off the motherboard. Locate the CPU hidden underneath the assembly. Turn the locking screw, which is positioned below the CPU, counterclockwise with a flathead screwdriver.

      Lift the CPU out of the notebook. Remove the two screws at the top of the motherboard and repeat the process with the two screws at the bottom of the motherboard.

      Grip the top and bottom edges of the motherboard and move the entire motherboard slightly toward the right to disengage each of the USB ports from the plastic case. Pull the right side of the motherboard toward the left to remove the motherboard from the notebook.

      Slide the left end of the new motherboard into the case and line up the USB ports with the holes on the case. Push the motherboard down into place and replace the four screws. Reassemble in reverse order the remaining components you removed
