How to Plant Winter Bulbs
- 1). Prepare the planting bed by loosening the soil to a depth of 12 inches with a cultivating fork.
- 2). Spread 2 inches of compost and peat moss over the soil and mix in with the cultivating fork.
- 3). Water well with a garden hose and wait 48 hours before planting bulbs.
- 4). Read on the package or online about the recommended planting depths for the bulbs you want to plant. Bulbs are usually planted twice as deep as their width at the widest point.
- 5). Dig a hole that is a couple inches deeper than the correct size for a bulb's planting depth. Place a few inches of crushed gravel in the hole to improve drainage.
- 6). Place the bulb in the hole with its "nose," or pointed end, pointing upward. Cover it with loose soil.
- 7). Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each bulb, being sure to keep them at least several inches apart.
- 8). Mark each location so you know where the bulbs are.
- 9). Cover the area a layer of straw, pine straw or other mulch to keep it protected and somewhat insulated.
