How to Put Up Okra in a Food Saver
- 1). Clean and wash okra that you grow or purchase. Trim the tops if they have dried or split.
- 2). Blanch your okra in boiling water. The University of Georgia recommends that you leave small okra pods in the water for three minutes; leave larger ones for four minutes.
- 3). Cool the okra and allow it to drain on paper towels or in a colander. You can cool the okra quickly and stop the cooking process by dropping it into cold water. Remove it immediately.
- 4). Select the Food Saver bag that you need, according to the size of the portions that you want to store. If you are using a Food Saver roll, create a bag by pulling a section of the roll forward and cutting it with the built-in cutter. Seal one end of a roll to make a bag.
- 5). Spoon your measured portions into your Food Saver bag. Leave at least three inches of space at the top of your bag for effective vacuum sealing.
- 6). Insert a folded paper towel along the edge of the open end of the bag to help absorb excess moisture. When you put the bag into the Food Saver appliance, let the rest of the paper towel fall into the vacuum tray.
- 7). Place the open end of the bag in the Food Saver with the edge inside the vacuum channel. Check to be sure that you have left enough room between the vacuum channel and the food for proper sealing.
- 8). Close the lid of the Food Saver. Lock it with the latch on older models that have one. Plug the cord into an outlet.
- 9). Choose the "Moist" food setting for best results. The latest model has a "Food" button that you use to change the appliance from "Dry," the default setting. Most earlier models have a "Moist" button that you press.

Press the "Vacuum and Seal" button to start the vacuum process on models that do not have the auto-start feature. Wait for the "Seal" light to go off before you remove your bag.
