  • 1). Place the HP 30S trimmer in a flat work area. Lift the rubber boot off the end of the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug using a socket wrench and spark plug socket.

  • 2). Press the test plug into the boot on the high-tension lead wire. Clip the test plug to a grounded metal point on the engine block. Move the ignition switch to the "On" position.

  • 3). Pull hard on the starter rope three times and check for a blue spark to jump across the points. Service the ignition system if the spark is yellow or absent.

  • 4). Disconnect the test plug from the engine block and the rubber boot. Pull on the starter rope several more times to clear the combustion chamber. Screw the compression gauge directly into the spark plug hole until it's finger tight.

  • 5). Pull hard on the starter rope until the compression gauge reading stops increasing. Check the levels to make sure there is at least 80 to 110 psi inside the engine. Service the air and compression systems if the reading is low or drops off rapidly.

  • 6). Unhook the air filter cover and pull out the air filter. Unscrew the air filter box from the side of the trimmer to access the carburetor. Unhook the fuel hoses from the carburetor with your fingers. Service the fuel system if no fuel comes out of the end of the hoses.
