Squirrels, though cute, can be the worst kind of critter to put up with. If you constantly hear pitter-patter on your wall, have your furniture gnawed upon and flowerbed messed up, then you can put the blame down on squirrels. It is understandable if you are reluctant to eradicate squirrels by causing harm to them. Here are 5 harmless ways you can remove squirrels from your home.

Seal All Entry Points

The best way to get rid of squirrels is by sealing all possible entry points around the house. Be careful though, you don't want to seal the house while they are inside. Squirrels can gain entry through holes as small as 2 inches wide.

Observe their behavior carefully; know when they come out to eat their food during night or day. Check the attic and basement for holes and, the moment they are out, get to work.

Stainless steel mesh or aluminum mashing can be a great way to seal the holes; it is sturdy and impossible to chew through. Caulk or foam sealant are also excellent options for sealing the holes.

Dealing with the Nest

If the squirrel has set up a nest in the attic and you have discovered it only after the nest is playing host to babies, then there are several ways you can remove the nest without harming the baby squirrels.

•    Be patient and wait for 12 to 14 weeks when the babies leave the nest on their own. Later, you can seal all the entry points.

•    Try placing a radio set about 6 feet away from the nest and keep the radio running for as long as it takes.

•    Place an ammonia-soaked rag tied with a string close to the nest. The pungent odor might propel the mama squirrel to move her nest elsewhere.

Predator Urine

This might sound disgusting, but it does work. Many farm supply stores sell predator urine. All you need to do is soak a rag with the urine and place it close to the entry point. The smell will make the squirrel think that a predator is out on the prowl and they will scurry away for their life.

One-Way Traps

In spite of sealing all entryways, if you still find pesky squirrels somehow making their way back to your home, then here is what you can do. Try one-way traps; there are tons of them available in the market that will allow you to catch squirrels without harming them. Follow the given instructions precisely. Once you have caught it, leave them far away from home.

Strobe Lights

The only thing that can irritate a squirrel enough to abandon the house is strobe lights. A high intensity strobe light flashes about 70 times per minute, which affects the brain of the squirrel, thus disorienting them. The flashes are so bright that squirrels can see it even with their eyes closed.

When no amount of effort on your side render any results, it is better to call a professional exterminator who can get rid of the pests, once and for all.
