Closets That Work With You

Having a closet that doesn't work can cost you precious time, patience and even money.
The first thing that you see in the morning is your closet as you're getting ready for your day.
If it is in disarray or if you just can't find what you're looking for, it can set a stressful tone for the whole day.
Some people are extra frustrated with their closets because they have tried organizing, over and over, only to end up right back where they started.
Use these tips to determine how you can change your thinking when it comes to organization so that this does not happen to you.
1) When you organize, consider your bad habits and come up with ways to help yourself either eliminate the habits or make the habits work for you.
For example, if you always leave your dirty clothes right outside or in the bottom of the closet, then this should be the place for your laundry basket.
If you keep your shoes in the closet but then end up leaving them by the front door everyday instead, then get them out of the closet and put some cubbies by your front door.
If you tend to push old clothes that you no longer wear to the back of the closet and leave them there, then create a divider and put everything that you are considering getting rid of behind the divider.
A piece of cardboard or poster board will work fine.
If something doesn't ever come out from behind that marker, then you know it's okay to just grab and go when you're ready to donate items to charity.
2) Another way to make sure that your closet works with you instead of against you is to use versatile closet accessories that you can change around over time.
One problem with organizing is that we organize in the summer forgetting that our winter clothes take up different amounts of space.
Or, we organize for what we have now, not considering that over time new clothing will come into the closet.
Investing a little in a wide variety of clothes hangers can be a big help in this department.
3) When you choose your hangers, get a few more than you need.
You can use wooden hangers or cedar hangers for heavy coats and suits.
Flat, space saving hangers, like sturdy metal hangers, are great for saving space.
Cascading hangers help you to coordinate outfits and save space just when you need it.
Getting a lot of different hangers will help you to adjust to changing seasons and take care of new items without having to start from scratch.
